Leia, Lisa and Julian all helped today. Pictured above they helped move the remaining compost from parking lot into SIG for storage and preping a new garden area. Lisa helped finish the seeding on berm and casting extra seed saved. Thanks everyone!!!
We got our first garden patch preped, fenced and seeded! Nanci pictured cutting posts for the fence. Getting compost for plot are Silda, Elisabeth and Lisa. 1-4" of compost, gypsum and bone meal were added. The berm was planted with bunch grass seed mix and "butterfly" flower mix. The garden was planted with cover crop mix and "butterfly" flower mix too.
Facilities put together the 2nd and final bioswale that mitigates the parking lot drainage not accounted for with the original landscaping and irrigation. Very nice job!
The primary purpose of the SIG is to support academic programs through composting, gardening and aquaculture. The SIG serves as a venue to learn and practice these skills in an environmentally-friendly, healthy and safe manner. Contact: sig@soka.edu
I have been a Master Gardener since 2007. Since 2010, I have been working on the SIG, and I am now the Garden Manager. Prior to that, I was the volunteer nursery manager for nearly 10 years propagating CA native plants for restoration at Laguna Coast Wilderness Park. Recently I finished the UCCE Master Composter program, and I’ve been a home composter for about 20 years.
